I believe art can be a form of prophetic art in the sense that “art” is formed in that place where our earthly thoughts and visions meet the spirit. Those that are more spiritually fit are able to interpret and convey our Creators messages to us if He chooses to use them. I don’t think you get to pick the day or time God uses you. But I do think it’s a good idea to be ready, just in case.
I met Anita in 2003 through a friend at church and today she remains a mentor and friend I can depend on. We have come to understand that many artist have many similar characteristics. Like me she has enjoyed using many forms of media to tell the stories she needs to tell. She has painted since childhood, exploring all forms of media and styles from cartoons to Biblical interpretation, watercolor to collages, using whatever means best to get the message out. Having grown up in a rural area in Iowa she uses the local landscape as a backdrop for many of her paintings. We are also both primarily self-taught.
Many of the artist I have met are extremely well educated with degrees in art, even a Ph. D. That did not mean their work would sell. Anita’s training has been through a correspondence course, a night class at Iowa Wesleyan College, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, occasional classes and seminars from itinerant artists and interaction with other artists in clubs and art groups. When someone speaks of prophetic art some people’s feathers are ruffled. Not knowing someones spiritual leanings when they come into my gallery I have watched the majority of visitors drawn to Anita’s work.
Anita has traveled overseas with mission groups and continues to visit India yearly, leaving pieces of her art in each of the seven countries where she travels. Many testify that Anita’s art has the Hand of God on it. She has a passion to tell about The God and Creator in a pleasant and easy to understand way, believing the old adage that says a "spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” She believes, ”If a cartoon gets the point across, that is fine. A master piece is even better." She has a strong faith that has helped many people who have visited her exhibits.
She says, "What we add or take away from this earth depends on how we steward what God has given us. Under God's direction problems and strife can be restored. Left to chance and selfish ambition it will be the worse for me having been here. I prefer to witness restoration and life.”
Her prophetic art is available for purchase in the form of different size prints and postcards.
